We (my daughters and I) are continuing their education of classic movies. Right now we are into the horror movies -- Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Frankenstein, etc. I lightened it up a bit last night with the 1958 version of The Blob, starting Steven McQueen (the trailer has him as Steve McQueen, but the opening credits billed him as Steven) and Aneta Corsaut (Andy Taylors second girlfriend on the Andy Griffin show about 8 years later). I saw this movie when I lived in NY, on WOR-TVs, 9 All Night movies probably in about 1973. I remembered it as very B-Movie. Watching it again, it really was an A-. The plot was good, the direction was very good, and the dialog was surprisingly well written. The acting was B-rated for sure, especially the supporting actors. McQueen was spotty -- very strong talking by himself with the police officer, but often he over-acted like I remember James Dean doing in Rebel Without a Cause... Burt Bacharachs theme song is quite weak, not really sure if it is light rock or beach music. Who would have ever thought he was going to be a great composer? My daughter Scarlett gave the movie one star. For what it was, I gave it three stars. Next up next is Ed Woods Plan 9 From Outer Space. youtu.be/TdUsyXQ8Wrs
