We need a balanced understanding of how Love works so people can feel safe being real. 1 Peter 4:8: And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” Erring on one side will leave us exposing people by speaking the truth without love. The Pharisees did this to the woman in John 8. Jesus came along and covered her in a way that led to freedom from her sins and hope to live differently. He saw value where others had written her off. The other extreme is to conceal things, believing that Love would prefer us to sweep it under the rug. It is quite the opposite. Jesus repeatedly tried to confront the Pharisees in a way that would wake them up to their need for Him to cover them. Their lives were fashioned to remain concealed in a fancy external package. Their concealment brought deeper bondage. Freedom can only come to the point that we are honest about where we are. At times it will be awkward, messy, and uncomfortable. When people see us loving others through their "stuff", it will give them strength to engage with Love also.
