We need a second word for argument. It is incredibly frustrating - TopicsExpress

We need a second word for argument. It is incredibly frustrating when Im trying to make an argument, that is, the act of making a point by presenting facts and logically extrapolating conclusions, and someone derails the conversation by assuming I want to yell at them and tell them they are wrong. I have no interest in arguing that way. It is stupid, immature, and incredibly unproductive. I DO have a desire to argue about ideas, about concepts and theories, about things exciting and revolutionary. Having a fear of the word argument and a general misunderstanding of the word only perpetuates a culture that enables people to be complacent, and uncritical of a world and system that actively works against them. The entire point of a democratic world is the free sharing of ideas, and the shaping and sharpening of those ideas through discourse. We need a society that is more comfortable with arguing, and more willing to discuss things in a serious manner, whenever and wherever they come up. If we save these issues for places and spaces controlled by people in power, then it is our own damn fault that we get run over roughshod by them. I am sick of a world where the loudest person wins. Id rather live in a world where the best ideas win, and the best ideas are gathered by collaborative argumentation over these things. #endrant
