We need to stop acting like racism and racial profiling isnt a thing in this country. We need to stop denying our biases when it was only 50 years ago when segregation was legal. We need to stop acting like being born white in this country doesnt give you privilege. In the past 24 hours I have read and heard some of the most horrendous and plain inhumane statements, that I would never say about another living being. Cory Booker says it best when he talks about how we convince ourselves that searches, surveillance, and even lethal force against people of color is justified. Until we are ready to look our fears and our prejudice in the face and confront it, there will never be peace. This isnt about a single man being killed (as tragic as that murder was), this is about institutional racism. Whether you like it or not, the system is set up to protect everyone, even an 18 year old kid who stole some crappy cigars from a convenience store. My heart is deeply saddened at the recent events. Many people are blaming the rioters for reinforcing the stereotype but perhaps if we had been better representing, understanding, and including of them for the past, I dont know, couple hundred years, they wouldnt have boiled up to this point. You can only scream so loud before your lungs give out and all you have left is your fists. Is that right? Absolutely not, but its still the truth. I just dont know when we decided that we didnt have to engage in humanity anymore. *End rant*
