We need to talk about ethics because..., as a society, the ethical use of animals is a reflection of our humanity. I am a Portuguese veterinarian, and I am close to completing a PhD in the teaching of ethics to veterinary students in Europe. I am currently in receipt of the VCI Newman Fellowship in Veterinary Ethics at UCD, and supervised by Dr. Alison Hanlon. My research aims at identifying the ethical issues faced by the veterinary profession in Ireland and to develop a practical toolbox to support veterinary decision-making, policy and regulation. In the future I would like to use my competences to inform policy decisions at the European level that affect the welfare of animals, the livelihood of farmers and environmental sustainability.
