We often quote Paul “Study to show yourself approved unto God a workman that needs not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) without continuing on to reflect on 2:16, “But shun profane and vain babblings for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” How good we Christians are at grabbing hold of single scriptures and ending up losing the context of what God is really trying to say. We can study until the cows come home and still miss the mind of God on a subject. But what does it matter how much scripture I know if I still enter into vain babblings that drag me down into non essentials. How much energy of the Christian army is being wasted on such folly instead of being expended on true spiritual warfare? In a military unit a solder knows not only what he should do but what he should not do also, should we not be at least as wise as a worldly soldier? Let us therefore determine to exercise all scripture in the context it was written and not be “scripture cherry pickers.” After all, while it is true there is no need to balance scripture it is also true that we do need to be balanced.
