We received a phone call tonight from a concerned citizen, about a potential scam that has started going around. The caller is stating that they are associated with an organization collecting money for the two slain police officers in New York City. We want to remind people, DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE TELEPHONE. This includes banking information, date of birth and/or social security numbers. There is typically a legitimate fund or benefit account set up for specific incidences, such as the slain officers in New York City, where you as an individual can donate, and these Legitimate Funds or Benefit Accounts DO NOT TYPICALLY call and ask for donations. If someone calls asking for a donation, this should raise a red flag to you. If it is something that you are interested in contributing to, ask for the information about the organization that they represent, or tell them that you will get back to them with your donation, and check into the organization further before making your donation, to make sure that they are legitimate. If you cannot find any information about this organization, this should be a red flag. If all else fails, please contact: local, county or state police.
