We remember this important Feast because it prepares the way for the birth of Christ. But I also see in Mary as someone who allows God to lead the way. In todays Mass we read from Romans 8:28 We know all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. Mary exemplifies this because when the call came to be the mother of Jesus, she initially responded with immense fear and concern. Gradually, she overcame her apprehensions. Things worked together for good because she responded positively with faith (never in despair, frustration, hopelessness). What strength to trust her life to God. And the joy that came in her life with the birth of Jesus! As parents, leaders in ministry and disciples of Jesus, fear can also come in our lifes when faced with a difficult situation or anything not life-giving coming at us from all angles. But as Mary, we submit with trust to God and place our littleness in His hands so He can work powerfully in any situation. We let God be God...we are not the Savior. I often pray to Mary to help me become like her. She was a powerful leader but yet in such a humble and loving way. Yes, there is great evil and suffering around us but with our eyes on Mary and Jesus, we can truly be that light that brings hope, joy, peace and increased faith in God that those He entrusts to our care may be filled with. We do the best we can with what we have and know -- He does the rest. Mary, may we let God lead the way -- especially in our family and in our lives so that we are faithful to His holy purpose. Amen.
