We said goodbye to Grandma Joyce this week, who died three days - TopicsExpress

We said goodbye to Grandma Joyce this week, who died three days ago. We were really glad to have had a few extra months with her, beyond what the doctors originally thought shed have. She was extremely clear thinking up until the last few days, giving us opportunities to talk about the most important things in life, and allowing us to press behind the normal surface of things in our talks. Our lives were so much richer for having spent these years with her. It seems almost every birthday or holiday included her, and I loved talking to her about whatever topic would arise. She was gentle, hospitable, witty, creative and disciplined. I dont remember seeing those crusty traits that so many times find us after weve traveled a lot of miles. She was one who could disagree with others without being cynical or mean. She was a woman of dignity. So many traits worth noticing, and hopefully ones we might duplicate by Gods grace. Her husband was a world war II bomber pilot who died two decades ago. She lived on her own since then, taking care of her business, her home and her family. Everyone who knew her must have felt like she was their own grandma. My kids got to spend countless hours doing tea parties with her, riding horses at her house, and telling great grandma all sorts of stories. She was modest in her lifestyle, living without pretension, but taking care to be wise with what shed been given, while at the same time being generous in all ways. In the final months she asked many questions about what Scripture really taught about God, Christ and eternity. As with most of us, coming down to the last days pressed the urgency of those issues on her mind. She asked me about my own story with Christ, and appreciated hearing how God had used my failures, medical problems, and struggles to draw me to Himself. Im delighted to have had so much time with her. We love you Grandma Joyce.
