We speak of companion animals as cats /dogs/horses. But there are so many. Parrots truly are my heart, but I didnt even know them till about 5 years ago when someone told me they were going to upgrade their non friendly cockatiel to a tame one. -_- I agreed because what would happen if I did not? Anyway its a long convoluted story with more sadness to start than happiness so Ill skip all that. But in the end I became a parrot person. Gizmo my quaker popped into my life during a time of heartbreak, a friend gave him to me and assured me I am a parrot person. I wasnt sure. Quaker parrots are not docile little tiels .. Gizmo is like a 2 year old child on a sugar high .. and he will bite your face to get his point across. I had a much better circle of parrot friends this time around and our bond is amazing, it is trust and love and acceptance. But I dont believe in having one bird and only support adoption so we spent two years together alone and one day when the finances were right and there was room in my home for another life I saw Kermits little face on one of the many parrot rescue pages I am part of. I fell in love right away and after a couple months (application and vetting and quarantine) he is now a fully integrated family member. And I can see How positive this is for Gizmo and for me too. But parrots are hard, they are noisy , messy , they throw temper tantrums , they BITE with beaks meant to crack nut, and when they arent treated right they suffer maybe more than most. They will literally rip holes in their own bodies because of mental anguish. Being a guardian to parrots is a full time job, it is expensive, it is something you always have to learn and keep up on. Diet recommendations are always changing, toys, proper large cages, sweeping, being pooped on, yelled at.. never sleeping in again. Their love is one of the purest things there is. But they should not be bred for captivity. Regardless of where you stand on other domesticated animals parrots are in NO SENSE domesticated. And when it goes badly they have no voice at all legally speaking. The laws that protect dogs and cats do not protect parrots in the same ways.. Please watch this film if you are interested in learning about their crisis.
