We spent the day retracing Pauls steps in Athens. We began at the ancient (now modern) Olympic Stadium recounting Pauls use of athletic metaphors in his letters, then to the ruins of the ancient synagogue and the agora (the public square) where Paul preached to the Athenians. Then we went to Mars Hill where Paul reasoned with the philosophers of Athens giving one of my favorite sermons of Pauls found in Acts (you can read all of this in Acts 17:16-34). We then visited the Acropolis before calling it quits in filming for the day. It was a great day today - cant wait to share this with our congregation this fall in our sermon series on Paul. Tomorrow were off to Corinth. Heres a few pics from today: 1. The temple to Zeus (with the Olympic stadium in the background), 2. LaVon and me in front of the Parthenon (built 400 years before the birth of Christ - in the time of Paul it held a 36 foot tall gold and ivory statue of Athena). 3. The Acropolis from Mars Hill (Paul preached there about God not living in temples built by human hands as he looked up at the Parthenon with its 36 foot tall image of Athena). 4. The Erechtheion is also atop the Acropolis and is a temple dedicated to both Poseidon the sea god and to Athena the goddess of wisdom - it overlooks Mars Hill where Paul). 5. Mars Hill (the Areopagus) as seen from the acropolis.
