We still have a few months before the latest wave of Superhero films are released which includes Captain America 2 - The Amazing Spiderman 2 - X-Men : Days Of Future Past. A novel time to review last year’s collection. Iron Man 3 : I believe that most comic book enthusiast found this sequel to be generally awful. At least that’s the opinion of most of the comic book fans that I’ve spoken with; and I’m in their corner. Among the criticisms, not enough Tony Stark as Iron Man, Pepper Potts off’s the villain (a rather lame interpretation of The Radioactive Man under the guise of Aldrich Killian), and an unforgivable tweaking of the Mandarin. Like Orientals can’t be villains; has Hollywood forgotten Genghis Khan or General Hideki Tojo? The only item that I actually enjoyed about Iron Man 3 was the after credits scene. Man Of Steel : Although there are a few people who I’ve spoken with who weren’t impressed with this imaginative spin on the Superman canon, I found it rather entertaining. The characters seemed fresh and the screenplay was in my opinion crisp and provocative. The Wolverine : This is the movie that “X-Men Origins : Wolverine” (2009) should have been. Classy but not too classy, action packed but not going overboard with the special effects and inventively manufactured characters. Furthermore, Hugh Jackman’s dialogue and mannerisms perfectly corresponded with the character in the comics. Thor : The Dark World : I’ll admit this sequel wasn’t as nicely packaged as the original “Thor” (2011) it was still an entertaining superhero movie. (Could have used a little more Lady Sif) It did have a distinctive comic book feel to it reminiscent of the old Stan Lee / Jack Kirby comics and the cast portrayed their characters in a convincing mode. ……. Coming up we have Captain America : The Winter Soldier to be released in April. From the previews this film looks on the spot terrific, same thing with X-Men : Days Of Future Past that has a May release date. However, I so hope the creative team behind this film doesn’t drop the ball as they did with the previous “X-Men : First Class” (2011) which could have been a better movie if it didn’t seem rushed, been a little more tactful with the subplots (Mystique’s and Hank McCoy’s romance should have been continued into the next film) and included far too many second rate characters. I hope I’m not expecting too much out of what appears to be fantastic opportunity in superhero cinema. Likewise to be released in May will be The Amazing Spiderman 2. I’m going to see this movie only out of curiosity since the powers to be at Columbia has reprehensively botched the Spiderman canon. I’ll give the previous made film high marks for casting Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben & Sally Field as Aunt May. However, Columbia’s attempt at reinventing the comic was a complete failure. Amazing Spiderman 2 not only has far too many villains but have plainly corrupted the manner in which they‘re depicted in the comics. Paul Giamatti’s Rhino looks like a knight in shining armor with a laser or some kind of utility weapon. Dane DeHaan who portrays Harry Osborn who in turn is the Green Goblin, and not his father Norman which is played by Chris Cooper, takes on a maniac approach which on paper might appear refreshing but goes against the familiar aspect of one of Spiderman’s foremost villains. Jamie Fox’s Max Dillon AKA Electro disregards the original interpretation of the character for the latest version which may or may not be interesting on screen. Furthermore, it’s hinted that both The Spider Slayer & The Vulture will be allude to in the film as both B. J. Novak and Colm Feore have been cast in the respective roles. It’s my opinion that you receive much more entertainment value from profound films then cool movies, and a lot more mileage in terms of film as an art form when you elevate the intelligence and class rather then producing a light and magic show. It’s been reported that Stan Lee wasn’t particularly fond of “The Fantastic Four” films, want to wager that he won’t be so impressed with this edition to the Spiderman franchise. Then in August we have The Guardians OF The Galaxy. This is a different team than I remember back in the day when I read comics. Originally the comic was about an American Astronaut who is coincidentally named Major Vance Astro and when tossed into the future while on a space expedition joins a team of heroes who defend the universe from a variety of cosmic evil. Other members of the team were from various planets in our solar system, the only guy I remember, other than the astronaut, was an archer with a large fin or Roman soldier like helmet decoration that went from his head down his back. Sometime after I abandoned comics Marvel overhauled the team and its this 2008 version that’s presented in the movie. At first I was lukewarm about this movie since I’m not familiar with the characters but after watching the previews I’m fairly intrigued with the film. Any thoughts….? Cheers.
