***We suffered a horrible tragedy this weekend, here is the full story along with some pictures.*** 11/9/14, 10am: We went out last night with my friends for my birthday to a small bar doing karaoke....what started out as a great night turned into anyones worst nightmare... While getting into a cab to get home safe, as we pulled away the car was approached by a group of intoxicated and angry people that were waiting for a cab. They confronted the driver at the window and he said he had a passenger and Service Dog (I must say the driver was very polite about and did not ask any questions, I was so relieved!!! For a few minutes...) and he would call dispatch and get them a cab for four and asked if they needed a second cab... A man instantly got irate and put his hands on the car/open window, at this point Lotus was on my lap fully focused on the confrontation (I was sitting behind the driver). As we began to pull away, a few of them started banging and kicking the cab... Then all hell broke lose!!!! The driver stopped abruptly, got out of the car leaving his door open and charged at 3-5 guys verbally and then eventually physically assaulting them. In a panic I got out of the car, Lotus at the end of her lead a few feet in front of me facing the crowd, I scrambled for my phone...its dead. I screamed call 911, three woman (mid/early 20s like myself) began quickly walking towards me in a threatening manner screaming shut up, mind your business, ect. My SD lunged up at one woman with her paws in attempt to stop and push her back, and she swatted at Lotus face. Lotus backed into me, her butt against my shins. The next thing I know one of them grabs me by the hair on my right side and slams me to the concrete, I see and feel Lotus standing over me, I grab the handle and get to one knee when Im struck about half a dozen times on the head and face, my head hitting the street two more times (I was mostly unconscious and am basing what happened by the location and severity of the contusions on the front of my face/head and the back of my head and neck and what witnesses said) I blacked out, but remember bits a pieces of people (strangers and my friends) breaking up the attack and talking to me. Apparently all I said was dont take my service dog and a screamed for Steven and Lotus. I do not remember the police or EMTs arriving, the ambulance ride or getting to the ER. I was having a severe panic attack and went into a seizure, choking on my vomit....Im in and out of consciousness throughout all of this. I was sedated with IV meds, my SD was with me but was very shaken and shutting down in the ER, but still in perfect behavior and off leash...so my boyfriend took her outside for some air, got her water and she settled down on his lap in the waiting room. I was xrayed, CT scan, ect...none of which I remember. After about 7 hours I was finally coming around, still very disorientated and in excrutiating pain. I was discharged a few hours later with a concussion, a dozen contusions on my face and head and neck trauma (whip lash), two abrasions on my face, bruised elbows and tailbone pain. When I got home and settled into bed, Lotus was COMPLETELY shut down..nibbled at her food a bit, no tail wags or eye contact, slept at my feet and seemed robotic. She is coming out of it now, but is clearly traumatized, exhausted and in shock...just as I am. I hadnt even thought to check her over for injuries...and when I did I was hysterical to find her right shoulder swollen and her right paw bruised and painful. She must have been kicked and stepped on...I think this is the worst part about the entire nightmare. I have been trying to get some sleep, I am delirious just now and on heavy pain killers and muscle relaxers. I spent just over two hours with police officers putting together what I could remember. They are interviewing witnesses tomorrow and going to the stores it occurred near for more information. I hope they will be found and justice will be served. I have already made arrangements to meet with my lawyer to take action against the taxi company. HOW COULD SOMEONE DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?? Its disgusting and I cannot believe we experienced something this severe and traumatizing. I know my dog is/will be physically ok, Im very concerned about her behavior or lack there of and how we will both mentally recover...but we must be strong for eachother and I know she will never EVER leave my side. This was a true test of her devotion and loyalty, and showed me just how deep and strong our bond is!!! *additional notes* Although some were/are astonished yet disappointed she did not show ANY aggression towards anyone, she is trained to never do so, and DID do everything she is trained to do. In the end she could have seriously injured or killed someone (lets be realistic...a 70 pound Pitbull...we all know the power and strength they have!!!) AND/OR gotten seriously injured or killed by someone she threatened or attacked... Im pleased with the outcome and am grateful we are ok!!
