We support Sound Designers on the Keweenaw. And Sound Designers support us. Our teachers also work with the Sound Design programs at Michigan Tech Visual and Performing Arts, helping educate the next generation of designers. And we LOVE when our designers help us set up our performance spaces for recitals. The Tony Awards are far from the be-all/end-all of defining the craft. But they are a very public recognition and acknowledgment that the craft even exists. One of the problems of sound design is that when it is done well, it is often so seamless that its easy to miss. You might feel as if you were transported to another time and place without realizing that the soundscape was part of that feeling of reality. It includes, but is absolutely not limited to, sound effects, underscoring, transition music, and ambient sound. Do you like being able to hear the actors? Sound designers are helping with that too.
