We surprised Chantals family at their annual reunion in Broken Bow, Oklahoma this week. We couldnt tell anyone b/c of the surprise bit. Part One: Trains Out of Phase We had prescription medicine delays Our headlights stopped working It rained a lot Tennessee is long and skinny Oklahoma is really far away We feel differently from each other about many things My blood sugar crashes The car smells like pee Louie develops strange love of the wind, cries whenever we close the windows (see: it rained a lot) NOTE: People should not get over too soon when traffic goes to one lane, it CAUSES the traffic jam - planning to make a video about this Part Two: The Dauntless We show up (surprise!) in a cloud of bubbles and fog horns (and pee smells) and presents Chantals family loves: Cliff diving, speed boats, games of chance, trucks, grilled meats, pranks, jokes told in an accent, each other I fall asleep every time someone put a baby in my arms Louie has the. time. of. his. life. The word cabin is apparently relative I am not allowed to see the girls change b/c I am Uncle Billy We took the lake drive (thanks, Melissa Schrade) My baby is a grease monkey who fixes headlights Part Three: Gilding the Lilly The trip home is always faster, even from Broken Bow Best nap ever on a boat dock next to a dammed up creek in TN I get to show Chantal Asheville and Black Mountain, NC We finally make it to Raleigh, in the dark, stay overnight for the grits Find a small town with a gay mayor, an abandoned old movie theatre, and college friend with similar dreams to open an art space!!! Louie chases his first squirrel, gets his first tick, becomes real dog NOTE: Washington DC sucks, dont stop there for lunch, the roads are dumb, people dress bad, everyone talks about politics, and there is a paver missing from the sidewalk in Old Town Alexandria that will break your ankle, for serious That terrible moment when you see the NYC skyline and realize you have another 9 months left in grad school before you can leave The next moment when you realize you know what is next and are ready to jump in Recap: I love Chantal.
