We take issue with one element of Tom Coburns final Wastebook. His treatment of sleep apnea is one off and, quite frankly, insulting to veterans who suffer from it. As someone who contends with the effects, its not a joke, its not a scam. Its a pain in the ass, something we credit to perpetually screwed up sinuses exposed to one too many tours in Iraq, sleeping too close to the burn pit, and inhaling one too many dust storms over the years. Maybe instead of ridiculing the rise in sleep apnea claims by our generation of veterans, he could push for a in-depth study of the problem... its not just a simple matter of better science identifying the disorder, theres a cause behind it. We owe it to ourselves to find that cause.
