We think happiness always depends purely on non-servile pursuits. But pleasure is often derived from a job well-done because the latter generates homeostasis between mind and the environment. This applies to work suited to the sensibilities and developmental needs of the child. Once homeostasis is achieved, the child will feel encouraged to pursue more work that is well-adapted to his/her capacity for independent activity. The material used is the quatrefoil metal inset. Tracing the metal inset strengthens the inner arm muscles; tracing the metal frame works more on the outer arm muscles. Tracing both prepares the whole arm for writing with whole muscle groups. Dr. Montessori was among the first pioneers in applying ergonomics in early childhood education. I see this as the ballet exercise preparatory to writing gracefully.
