We think its great Kansas has taken action duplicating a successful anti bullying program to make a very big difference. US researchers study Finnish anti-bullying programme The KiVa programme was developed at the University of Turku KIVA The KiVa programme was developed at the University of Turku Researchers at the University of Kansas in the United States are hoping to bring Finland’s successful bullying prevention programme, KiVa, to American schools. Starting as early as the 2012-13 school year, a pilot programme could kick off in selected classrooms in the Lawrence school district. If successful, the model could expand nationally. KiVa, which tries to change perceptions about bullies throughout the whole school, has impressed researchers with its proven reduction in bullying incidents. The programme takes a holistic approach to bullying including a rigorous classroom curriculum, videos, posters, a computer game and role-playing exercises. The goal of the programme is to create an environment in which bullying is not tolerated. In KiVa, there is a strong emphasis on influencing the onlookers to make them show that they are against bullying and to make them support the victim, rather than encourage the bully. The approach is already used in more than 80 percent of schools in Finland and is about to be launched in the Netherlands. Previous school efforts to stop bullying have focused either on the bullies or on their victims and have not been particularly successful.
