We thought the peeps might like to see an example of some of the bizarre emails we receive on an almost daily basis. Please note that we are in no way poking fun of the people who send us questions like these, we are very happy to provide answers and ease fears whenever possible. There is so much misinformation about bats in the world, but I have to say, this one is a first: *********** Subject: bat mucus Message Body: Im trying to help someome who is terrified of bats. He read that you can get rabies from bat mucus. He is afraid that when he feels a drop of water from a roof or a vent, even though he has never seen a bat, he is concerned that a bat may be dropping mucus which would would then give him rabies. Does mucus build up in bat roosts or do rabid bats have excessive mucus that may drip as they fly by. I cant find an answer for him and am trying to ease his fears. Thank you for your help **************** Subject: Re: bat mucus Dear ____, Bats do not excessively drip saliva or mucus any more than a squirrel, bird or even an insect would while roosting in a tree or overhead. Outside of a really gross horror movie, this scenario isnt even possible. Hope this helps. :) ************ For anyone interested, here is our page on bats and rabies: batworld.org/rabies-info/
