We toured the walled Tuscan hilltown of Volterra with a local guide. She shared her knowledge of the history of the this town originally founded by the Etruscans in the 5th and 4th century B.C. In medieval times it was a city state and was constantly threatened by rivals from other nearby city states. Hence this defensive walls and structure of the buildings that added protection to inhabitants. We also learned that while the Medici family was loved in Florence, neighboring city states who were plundered as the Medici increased their power and wealth do not hold the same opinion. Today there are many different artisans in Volterra. We learned of the requirement that all students in Volterra are required to gain expertise in one area of the arts in order to graduate from high school. We visited a printmaker and an alabaster workshop.
