We use to get so bored growing up on the farm. Of course, we always had chores to do but sometimes we would have some free time mostly when school let out for the summer. We didnt have toys so we had to make up our own games to play. My sisters and my self would make stick dolls and make their clothes out of scrap cloth left over that ma didnt need. It seems like every summer my sisters always wanted to go down in the field under the sand pear trees and make a play house. They did a good job making it but would always need something from the house and would send be back to get it. They would say you go Irene because you are real sneaky and you want wake of daddy. They wanted me to bring back biscuits and ham. They knew daddy would be sleeping and if I woke him up I would be the one in trouble. They said dont worry we will have a surprise for you when you get back. So I run across the field barefoot and my feet got full of sandspurs. So I am crying and one of my sisters is pretending to be a nurse that day. She pulls down a big grapevine and breaks it and tells me to drink from it and the pain will go away. Well it didnt. So she said I have something for you to eat and I am sure it will make you feel better. So she has a little bucket half full of chufas (nut grass or earth almonds) she washes the dirt off of them and tells me to eat them. Well they tasted so good that I forgot about the sandspurs hurting my feet. So after that I always wanted her to go in the field and dig some up for me. They would be growing where we had peanuts planted and I dont know if daddy planted them or they just grew there. Sometimes she would get me some and other times I would follow the hogs and when they would root them up I would grab them. My brother lives in Live Oak and a couple years ago he found some chufas on a friends farm and pulled them up for me. They still tasted good to me and I saved some of them to show to my grandchildren.
