We usually react in one of two ways to misfortune. One option is to become upset and angry, wanting to strike back at society or at whomever we deem to be the cause of our ruin. Another option is to become depressed and throw a pity party for ourselves. Feeling helpless and hopeless, we throw up our hands and say Whats the use ? Why should I live ? Nobody is helping me and the whole world is against me. Poor me. I dont have what I need. The world isnt fair to me. Im entitled to more. Poor me. People are criticizing me. They dont appreciate me. Theyre not supporting me. Poor me. Im sick, Im injured, I have spirit afflictions. I dont feel well. So we usually stay stuck in our discouragement and our pity party. Thats the samsaric mind and thats why we are ordinary sentient beings, immersed in suffering. Do either of these response solve the external problem or bring us happiness here and now ? No, in fact, by thinking in these ways, we usually wind up more unhappy and upset. Thubten Chodron
