We want this to be a nation where all people have true self-determination, where all people have the opportunity to define success in ways that go beyond their personal earning power. All the rage to pretend that there is one curriculum that everyone must learn, and that everyone should be personally motivated to learn it.But such assumptions fly in the face of what we know to be true about human learning and, indeed, what we know to be true about the human condition. The idea that we can or should create an educational system based on these assumptions, that we will somehow have a system that enable us to sustain and improve individual and collective lives, is preposterous. We need an educational agenda open to all voices--one that prepares youth for active participation in both the political and economic arenas. One that when implemented enables us to act as if everything we know is tentative and subject to further study. It is only through sustained investigation and creative problem solving that will we continue to learn and improve--continue to prepare our nation and the world for dire twenty-first century circumstances. Quite literally, humanitys future is at stake.
