We wanted to discuss a few things with everyone due to a recent incident we had at our range last night during our Steel Challenge. Dead Center has been doing a variety of shooting events since we opened in February 2012. Our events have developed in both design and execution. We pride ourselves in providing an enjoyable, safe and educational shooting experience. Last night one of our customers who is an experienced shooter and frequent participant in the Fun, Tactical and Steel Shooting events had a negligent discharge. Unfortunately this resulted in a non-life threatening Gun Shot Wound (GSW) to the upper thigh. Sequence of Events: During one of the strings of fire and upon re-holstering, a participant did not keep their finger straight and outside the trigger guard when they were re-holstering. This caused his finger to depress the trigger resulting in the discharged his handgun. He immediately straightened his finger and re-holstered. The shooter did not think they had a GSW, but upon closer examination he had a small entry and exit wound 3-4” apart on his outer mid-thigh. EMS was called to the scene and was transported to the local hospital for treatment. As of this morning he is walking and feeling fine but he has been humbled, as we all have. So let’s examine what happened. Were all of the safety rules followed? Treat every firearm as if it were loaded even after you ensure it is unloaded. YES Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. NO Keep your finger off the trigger and OUTSIDE your trigger guard until you up on target with the intention to shoot. NO Be sure of your target and consider its background. YES We can all armchair quarter back what happened and what you claim YOU would do or how YOU do things but that is not the point. The point is this is a lesson for ALL of US. New shooters, experienced, professional, etc…ALL OF US. The main take away is never get complacent, never assume and never take for granted, this can happen to any one of us. Fortunately the injury is not life threatening and they have learned from their mistake and didn’t blame the gear or the gun or the situation. They took full responsibility. Folks , PLEASE understand, shooting sports are dangerous but only when we become complacent or we don’t follow the safety rules. We all need to educate, train, and share these experiences so we all can enjoy our sport safely.
