We wanted to share this tribute to Quail Dobbs that we received via e-mail today from someone who truly admired him: I wanted to share what I posted online today about Quail Dobbs after hearing he had passed away: When people say, One of a kind, they are talking about legendary rodeo clown, Quail Dobbs. During college days at Hardin-Simmons in the 70s, I was a member of the World Famous Cowboy Band. We entertained at lots and lots of rodeos in West Texas area and had a chance to see Quail Dobbs in action quite a few times. How tough was this gentle man? I remember one night when Quail saved the lives of two bull riders. One rider got hung up in the rigging and couldnt dismount. Quail somehow jumped up on top of the bucking bull and rode it as he ripped the cowboys hand free of the rigging, then got out of the way. It looked like the second cowboy had been knocked out. Just laying in the dirt. The bull was only a few feet away, getting ready to charge, when Quail jumped in between the cowboy and the bull. He started slapping the bull on both sides of the head. The bull lowered his horns and flipped Quail straight up in the air. Quail did a somersault, landed on his feet, and immediately went back to slapping the bull, distracting him long enough so others could pull the cowboy to safety. The next night, in front of a packed house at the Taylor County Coliseum, Quail was presented with a check and heartfelt thanks from all the cowboys for what he had done. That, my friends, is a true hero. RIP, Quail Dobbs. You had a big impact on many, many lives. John Mitton Sugar Land, TX Thank you Mr. Mitton for sharing these special words about a true rodeo hero and legend.
