We were at the shelter and as usual things were going wild. Dogs - TopicsExpress

We were at the shelter and as usual things were going wild. Dogs were barking, volunteers were working, the phone was ringing, it was just hectic. Then I noticed something odd, right in the middle of the busy walkway was Belle one of our shelter dogs. She was belly-up and sound asleep. I couldnt imagine how anything could relax enough to sleep during the chaos. She started to wake up so I had to ask her, I said, Belle how do you sleep through all this mess, I cant sleep in a warm bed at night and I bet you could sleep through a tornado. She said, Its easy, I just set my mind to a relaxing event in my past and the next thing you know Im out like a light, now you have to be careful, and think of a relaxing or peaceful event not a high-energy or a happy event like a party, this just tends to get you motivated and hyped up. Just think of a calm moment in your life and nature will take care of the rest. I thought I would try it and instantly went in my mind to my basic training days in the Army. Normally, in the morning we were woke up to the sound of garbage cans being banged, Drill Sergeants yelling, lights shining in your face, but on the last day of boot camp I was lying in my bunk and all of a sudden I heard the beautiful voice of Karen Carpenter singing, Have yourself a Merry Christmas, the volume was low, the lights remained off, and I suppose it was the Drill Sergeants way of giving us a pleasant send-off. It was so calm, so tranquil, for a moment it felt like I had drifted off to heaven. As I thought of this moment I really started to feel relaxed. I said, You know Belle, this really worked....Belle,....Belle? I could see that she too had apparently found a peaceful place and was once again sound asleep in the middle of the walkway. So today, if you find yourself getting antsy, or uptight, think of a calm and peaceful moment from your past, it really does work. Just some free advice from Belle, a shelter dog. Have a smooth and easy day. -Doug.
