We were joined at Besselsleigh Wood this afternoon by Ray Strugnell and three volunteers, Anna, Alex, and Debbie from the local community for an introduction to identifying butterflies. The wood is still completely carpeted with Bluebells as you can see. We spotted five species in all: Small Tortoishell (2), Orange-tip (3), Peacock (6), Large White (4), and Speckled Wood (2), making 17 butterflies in total. Ray is currently trying to draw up an inventory of flora and fauna for the site, before introducing a new woodland management regime. We have two further sessions booked to help people identify and record butterflies, so if you live nearby, and would like to join us, just send a message to this page!
