We will be drafting out a petition by today to allow you to show - TopicsExpress

We will be drafting out a petition by today to allow you to show your protest against imminent fare transport hike by SMRT but we want you to take a further step by boycotting SMRT for the whole month of December. You can participate in the boycott by doing it daily, twice weekly or even during the weekend only. Some of you have already started to make plans to wake up earlier and take the rival transport SBS buses or cycle to work. Others have started to make plans to carpool together. I know that its not easy for many Singaporeans to participate in this SMRT boycott in December as there are no viable alternative mode of transport. However, with some careful planning and a lot of heart, we can hopefully change that mindset - unity is strength and we need to send a clear signal to the authorities that we dont take things lying down anymore from now on. We will fight the system legally with all our heart and mind by doing things that are non-violent. Our cost of living has being inching up yearly and transport cost eats up a chunk of our disposable income. If you top up $50 to your EZ link card nowadays, chances are it can only last you for two weeks before you need to top it up again. If you are driving to work daily and want to participate in our boycott SMRT protest in December by ferrying some of our readers to work around your area, please let us know and email us at [email protected]. We will then post your vehicle number here so that others can hitch a ride to the same area of work. We can work out the details of the carpooling later on. Some of you who want to catch a cab together to work can let us know also so that we can group you up together. Simply email us at [email protected] providing us with your area of residence and work so that we can have the details of grouping. Some of you could participate in the boycott daily, others twice a week whereas some prefer to boycott SMRT during the weekend. All these efforts to step up pressure to lower ridership in the month of December are all laudable. I remembered how tens of thousands of Americans ditched the buses in Alabama and decided to take ownership of their lives for 381 days by boycotting public buses before the authorities changed the legislation of bus seating there. You see, only whites can occupy the seats around the front area and blacks have to stand up even though the bus is empty of commuters. During the bus boycott, they walked for hours to work and carpooled regularly and changed destiny for the whole of America as they take ownership of their lives. Singaporeans, I have had enough of whining when many say we cant change things here because we ourselves do not want to change and sacrifice our little comforts temporarily for the greater good. Waking up earlier at 6am to walk or take the rival buses to work is a sacrifice of our comfortable sleep in bed but remember things wont be handed over to us on a platter freely - freedom is gained through much struggle and sacrifice. And its only for a month - never say it cant be done unless you have tried it. Singaporeans lets unite together and say NO to a fare hike!
