We would have had VIP quarters in Kyrgyzstan, but the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders beat us to it. Im actually really glad we got a chance to live closely and uncomfortably packed inside huge tents and small restrooms with the soldiers, sort of experiencing what they do. Im having the time of my life. Then again, I only have to do this for a few weeks, while for them, this is only the beginning of many, many months of sardine living. It really is another world you have to see to even begin to understand. Still, I realize Ill never fully know what its like to be them. All of the things that make their lives seem to me to be wonderfully rich with purpose, camaraderie and sometimes joy are the very same things that make their lives selfless and, yes, oftentimes a bit downright uncomfortable. Once again, Im humbled and grateful for those who serve so that I dont have to.
