Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Expected Through Wednesday Friday, September 12, 2014 According to the National Weather Service, a weak tropical system moving westward across the Gulf of Mexico known as “Invest 92L” as well as an approaching cold front will likely bring heavy rainfall to Southeast Louisiana including St. John the Baptist Parish through Wednesday. Rainfall totals are expected to be 1 to 3 inches over the next five days with locally higher amounts possible. Heavy rainfall and enhanced tidal levels are the main threats for our area at this time. Currently, the weak tropical system is disorganized and traveling over South Florida with expectation to move westward toward Texas Gulf Coast through the weekend. There is a 30% chance of storm development by Wednesday, with most of the severe weather associated with the system to impact our area through Monday. Extensive rainfall coupled with existing high tides on the Lakes can result in street flooding in low-lying areas. The Public Works Department has prepared for the weather event by checking all pump stations and drainage canals as well as draining wells in advance. Public Works and Utilities Crews will be on call this weekend in the event problems occur. Residents should report any issues or concerns during the rain event to 911. Residents are also asked to assist with the predicted heavy rainfall by cleaning catch basins and avoiding placing debris in ditches, drainage canals and on the side of the road as to not impede drainage. The St. John the Baptist Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness and Communications Office are monitoring weather conditions and have been in contact with the National Weather Service and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security to receive the latest weather forecasts. It imperative that residents monitor local weather stations for any updates and changes in the forecasts.
