Weather Update for the week: Some chilly nights ahead this - TopicsExpress

Weather Update for the week: Some chilly nights ahead this week but some awesome afternoons! Temperatures rebound nicely in the 60s tomorrow and 70s for both Tuesday and Wednesday across Oklahoma! Then the focus shifts towards the end of the week. Like I mentioned the other day an an epic Rain/Ice/Snowmageddon 2-3 day storm system has been floating around in the model data for quite some time now. About 10 days to be exact. I think once I said the word snow, everyone glossed over the rain part. Even the ice takes a back seat. Also I never mentioned location for each either and for good reason, it was just way too early. So what can I tell you today? Were locked into a very strong polar jet stream flow as the polar vortex situates closer to the Great Lakes region. This will drive arctic intrusions south across the plains with strong upper ridging across the W 1/3 of the country. At the same time an upper level low pressure area sneaks in under the ridge along the Mexico/Az border and slowly moves east. This is what brings the precipitation. So we have the source region of cold air and the region of precip. The only thing left to do is to time it all out just right to bring the pain. As it appears today, heavy snow blankets NM Friday and moves east into W OK and NW TX Friday night. Heres the question after that for Saturday, will it be just a cold rain across OK or will there be just enough arctic air to make it ice? Or would there be even more cold air to make it all snow? Believe or not that question cannot be answered just yet. Every day well get a better idea. Right now the models say a chilly rain in the 40s but the pattern dictates otherwise. The next thing that is for sure, is widespread rainfall across the state of Texas, 1-4. Cold enough for snow in the W 1/3 again and even likely getting into DFW with significant snow *IF* we can get the timing right. For OK, the system needs to jot north a hair to increase amounts and with the slow movement, it may take a few days to move through the region. So hang tight, this is going to be a fun one to forecast and Ill let you know as soon as I can be more specific. Please share and download my free app. The link is below.
