Wedding MUGURTHAKAAL : A Ritual with a lot of Meanings It is a cultural rights and mixed with Hinduism to start the beginning of Wedding Process. One of friend mom was asking me if i could explain the process on how and why the ritual is performed by South Indians namely Tamilians : Definition : Mugurtham means " Good or Auspicious time " kaal also mean Kaalam” - Time. : Mugurthakaal Meaning it is Auspicious Time Mugurthakaal denotes that the family is about to host a very auspicious event which is a solemn matrimony or it is call “Vivagam” with the blessing of Lord of all hurdles Pillayaar and with witness by Million Agles with complete blessing of the family, village elders. This ceremony also denote that the Groom or Bride will not suppose to leave the house except for wedding temple and may not touch or deal with anything sharp, hot or anything dangerous. This kankanam will be done upon completion of Murguthakaal Ceremony Even though this ceremony do vary in some detail and sequence accordingly to villages, region and conveniences but the fundamental idea of the ceremony remain as the most well thought beginner for a joyful moment not only for the bride-grooms and their family but the whole village/relatives. Murgurtha Kaal is performed typically 3 or 5 Days ( including the day of the ceremony and the day of wedding) before the Wedding. It depends on how elaborate the celebrations are. Usually in Malaysia it is performed 3 days ahead of the wedding "mugurtham" example of the wedding in on Sunday this Mugurthakaal ceremony will take place in the morning of Friday during the “nalla neram” – auspicious time; All Auspicious ceremony for the wedding must not in any time start or end during Yemma Gandam or Raagu Kaalam. This is to maximize the easterly energy concept and divine waves thru good thinking heartily. REQUIREMENT: • It is a fresh cut wood (mustn’t be a dried or treated hood) or Sugar Cane about 6 to 8 feet height and about 2.5" to 3" Inches in diameters. It has to be clean shaved and treated surfaced. The other end of the wood must be in fork like sharp ( Kavathei) • All weddings or religious rituals starts with "Patchai Panthal" Green coconut Leafs hut erected in front of the house in which the 4th leg for the Patchai Panthaal would be the murgutha kaal. Or in many cases the Mugurtha Kaal is separated as many do not have the luxury nor facility to erect Patchai Panthaal. The patchai panthaal must have banana try with banana and also young coconuts. In absence of Patchai panthal for various reason, one may just have some coconut leafs as for the rituals. The custom denoted the bride and grooms will just grow never endingly like the off banana trees. Coconut symbolizes purity and essential of fulfilling life. I must say much of this is being Tamilian culture and not Hindu rites, even though they both nestled together as a whole. • The cleaned Mugurtha Kaal need to be full treated with turmeric and sandalwood paste. Strategically 5 areas the Vibuthi in triple horizontal ( Pattai) and kum kum pothu in the middle: • This process must be performed by "Sumangali" married relatives or members of the family. • A bundle with 9 Type of Grains - Navathaniam - Like dhall, moong dhall, limo beans, red beans, and with some coins in wrapped in a small yello corton cloth ( 10" x10" inches) • The yellow knotted cotton cloth with 9types of grains will be tied with Mango leafs ( the end branch say with 7 leafs ), Arasa Ilai, Therpe Grass( if could not locate this grass - can be replace with neem leafs also ) to the fork end of the mugurthakaal with some jasmine flower charam rolled around it. • So now our mugurthakaal is in yellow color with turmeric and sandalwood with 5 sets of vibuthi/kumkum and at the fork end tied with yellow cloth & the assorted leafs. Now we prepare the Prayer Items : • We need - a tumeric paste and form it like cone " Pullayar Pudingge" • To the Pullaiyaar plz do vibuthi, kum kum and stick in with " arugam pull - arugam grass" - Kamachi Amman Vilaku - Bigger the better : with kum kum tilak - Kamachi amman Kutu vilaku - with 5 faces. with kum kum tilak and jasmine flowers - Suudam, Sambrani, Pujai Mani, Tuakal, Ennai, Thiri, - Thenggai, Kathi, Sembu/Copper Container with milk - Vethalai paaku : 1 Set for the prayer and 5 or 7 sets for the sumangalis - you could add kum kum and flowers on it to given as token of appreciation or the prayer participation. - We need some 9 Grain mixture in a small tray. - Banana leaf Magala Isai, Some Sweets, Bananas - Keep a pail with water for hand washign as we are dealing with tumeric and dirt and all. • “Kankanam” white cotton tread treated with turmeric and tied with turmeric root and ready to be paced on groom/brides wrist. Now the process of Mugurthakaal Placement 1) Pre dig a 12" - 15" deep hold with diameter like 6"inches: choose strategic place as 4th leg for the patchai panthaal or side of the house so that it will not be on the way of people as we will have to maintain the vilaku at the site till after the wedding. 2) The Mugurthakaal that is ready now will have to be installed a prayer to Lord Ganapathy and Lord Lakshmi : Show Sabrani and then Arathu - fire by all the sumangalis and take prasad – vibuthi. Once the process of purifying the Murgathakaal is completed. The pooja must be done some where closer to the hole that we going to place the mugurthakaal in. 3) Now, we are going to empty the tray of 9 Grains-Navathaniam into the hole, pour some milk and sprinkle with flowers. 4) Now Place the Murgurthkaal in the hole and straighten the positioning. 5) Now Place the banana leaf with kamachi amman vilaku, then "pillaiyaar" with some flowers. Now break the coconut place it accordingly and do pooja.at the bottom of the mugurthakaal. 6) It is important to maintain the vilaku to be lid thru our wedding occasion as presence of divinity.
