Wednesday - Professional Critique Day! Many have passed through and remain to be the colors of the Ethiopian Music Industry. But only a handful of them have managed to leave their own lasting impressions. Impressions that are unique enough that passes through generations as an Ethiopian identity ... My Wednesdays are dedicated for endorsing products that worth talking about and that I feel should be acknowledged and appreciated. Be it goods, services, places or personalities, I will be reviewing them from marketing perspectives and on their social impact. Seifu Yohannes, Bahta G/hiwot, Tilahun Gessesse, Mehamud Ahmed, Mery Armde, Ali Birra, Mulatu Astatke, Muluken Melesse and Aster Awoke from the earlier generation and Zeritu kebede, Tewodros Kassahun (a.k.a. Tedy Afro), Eyob Mekonnen, Johny Ragga and Jah lud from the recent times are part of the very few who remain to be the inspiration for many musicians. Some are known for their amazing power in commanding their voice, others for their diversity in the ideas they raise, fewer of them for the depth and power of the issues they raise and yet others are known well for their stunning performances on stages. Sileshi Demissie a.k.a. Gash Abera Molla is one of those iconic artists with a talent that is not perfectly matched by others yet. He probably is the only folk singer in Ethiopia with the passion and commitment to promote Ethiopian culture and history around the world with one of a kind work of art. Through the last eleven albums he put out and on the recent one that was released for the New Year, ‘Yamral Agere’, Silieshi has managed to revive back our forgotten stories and traditions. He has travelled across the world, taught in big universities in various countries and lectured on various platforms about Ethiopian music and art. He for sure has been an ambassador of art for Ethiopia around the world. Being part of the Album launching event at National Theatre on Monday 16 September 2013, he received a standing ovation for his stunning performance. I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun and joy on a live performance. It was as if he managed to create different events on the stage with each masterpiece presented. Yamral Agere has been one of my favorite albums that gave me the boost I needed for the New Year that just started. Do go out and buy the CD, you will truly see where a tamed voice, a well grooved musical play and a wonderfully crafted storyline blend together to paint pictures in your head while taking you of off your feet for to dance with ecstasy. ምንትዋብ … ዳርኳት ልጄን … አዚላ … አባይ … Sileshi Demissie a.k.a. Gash Abera Molla is both a character and a brand for the Ethiopian music industry that has to be promoted well so it sinks in the favorite tunes of the generations to come. And ‘Yamral Agere’ is a must have album at home …
