Wednesday 12 November 2014 Miyajmi Island Even I had to wake up - TopicsExpress

Wednesday 12 November 2014 Miyajmi Island Even I had to wake up early, I felt great. No more sniffing. The other day I bought sandwiches and fruit juice to start the day with. After I prepared everything, I went out for a daytrip to the holy island of Miyajimi. With the streetcar I went to the railway station and there I took the train to the port. Everything went faster than planned and before I knew I was sitting on the ferry to Miyajima island. The weather was lovely; it was a little bit clouded and a little bit cold in the morning. It was just a short trip to the island and along the way I spoke with a Japanese man who is visiting this island every Wednesday. He had English language lessons today and he enjoyed to proof is knowledge. He gave me some advice about the best sights of this island. During the short boat trip I recognized the famous red gate (Torii) is still with his base underwater. My first visit at the island was the Itsukushima shrine. It was a bit boring; everything is red and no real treasures to see. Also the next temple (Daiganji) was a bit boring, so I moved further. The next temple is named Daishoin temple. I had to climb some stairs, but the temple is really interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. From here I walked to the ropeway station, which is a nice hike passing tame deer’s and lovely autumn foliage. The ropeway took me to near the top of Mount Misen. From the first viewpoint I did not have a clear view. Hopefully the weather would improve after I climbed to the real summit of Mt Misen. Along the way I passed several interesting temples and shrines. Finally I arrived at the top, but it was cold and rainy (just a little bit) and I could not enjoy the view that I had hoped for. I ate my lunch here in the hope the weather improved, but that did not happen. So after a half hour I went down again and walked back to the famous red torii. Now the base was fully underwater and it was a lovely sight to make pictures. The rest of the time I spend to explore the rest of the island and tried different kinds of local snacks along the way. One specific sight was a temple raised by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is never finished since the major Daimyo died. The temple has some nice views of woodcarving and autumn foliage. I discovered a path above the village which gave nice views. My last task on this island was strolling down the shopping street. All along the island and in the village one can see tame deer. I arrived right in time for the ferry back to the mainland and like a miracle all other transfers with the train and streetcar were only a couple of seconds waiting. When I walked back to the hotel, I almost had an accident with a bike. I still had to learn that bicycles are not biking on the street but on the sidewalks. That made it for pedestrians a little bit dangerous. In the hotel I relaxed a bit and refreshed myself for another evening in Hiroshima. For diner I decided to go to a BBQ restaurant. There was a lot of meat and some vegetables and it was nice, but not very special. After diner I went to the same bar as the night before. Sadly the bar was now fuller with Japanese people and the girls did not have much time to have conversations with me. But so now and then a Japanese guy was talking with me in English. He was probably the only one who could speak English and he explained everything to the rest of the pub. I did not make it late this time. Tomorrow I had to wake up early.
