Wednesday 18 September 2013 1 Tim 3:14-16; Ps 111; Lk 7:31-35 Theme: The children at the market place One day, Johan Lukasse, president of the Belgian Evangelical Mission, was out evangelising in his native Belgium, where 9/10 of the population were nominal Christians. A man responded to his preaching thus: “Mister, what do you need?” As Lukasse groped for an answer, he went on: “Tell me what you need and I will buy it for you.” Stunned, Lukasse realised he had either been mistaken for a beggar or his listener assumed only the poor could be interested in Christ. As the man turned to leave, he sneeringly put Lukasse out of his confusion: “Do you see that we don’t need God anymore?” [Culled from ‘Just Saying No’ by Stan Guthrie] In today’s Gospel extract, the Jews rejected John as a demon-possessed man because of his austerity. When the gentle Jesus appeared, they dismissed him as a glutton and friend of sinners. Luke’s Gospel is a warning to all who act like the Jews and the unnamed man in the story above. It ends with these words: “the children of Wisdom always recognise her work.” Those who embrace the Gospel are children of wisdom. Those who reject it are like children sitting in the market place, doing everything wrongly, taunting each other, and arguing over their petty knowledge. Most of the strategic political and economic places in our world are occupied by such market children people. Is it any wonder why our planet is in turmoil?
