We can become so fanatical about destroying evil that we can overlook the evil of destructiveness. The book is a poem to the mercy of God and God’s universal care. With three stage-managed contrivances like the storm, the big fish and the plant that grew and died over two nights, the author shows us the mercy of God in holding back the catastrophe that would have consumed Nineveh. Good Lord, give us the wisdom that would prefer to conquer enemies by turning them into friends than to see them annihilated. Lord, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them ...
