Wednesday, March 18...Day of contrasts. Today we took our bus into Guatemala city where we spent some time at Guatemala City Cemetery overlooking the Guatemala City dump. Then we had a wonderful opportunity to meet with a mission that is working with children from families who are working (scavenging) in the dump. At least 50% of the children at this school have parents who try to make a living by scavenging in the dump. These children come from very poor and often broken families. Our students led games for over 400+ students. It was such a pleasure to spend time with these children. In the afternoon we went to a very high-end mall called the Oakland Mall where students were able to spend some time shopping and watching a movie in a extravagant theatre. This was a day of contrasts to say the least. We spent time with the poorest of the poor and we shopped with the richest of the rich, all within a half-hour drive. It is hard to know what to make of all we have seen today. We feel blessed to spend time with some amazing kids but our hearts are heavy with all that we have seen. Thank-you for your continued prayer support we definitely feel it as we travel and connect with various groups in Guatemala. Tomorrow we leave early in the morning for 2 days at the coffee plantation.
