Wednesday, September 5. The receipt of a postal card bearing the following has been a great surprise to me this evening: "My Journal": The 1906 Diary of Earl Moses Hodson Wednesday, September 5. The receipt of a postal card bearing the following has been a great surprise to me this evening: “Athens, Ala. 9-5-’06. Dear Earl: I am down in God’s country once more, had intended to drive out to your home to see you, but heard you were teaching at Petty, so gave that up, can you come into dinner Saturday and spend the night, guess you won’t mind sleeping with your old college chum and tormentor for just one night. Be sure to come for I want to see you before going back to Philadelphia. Yours, ‘Laurie.’” Laurie! What hosts of memories almost overwhelm me; they hurl themselves upon me; they throttle me; they choke me; they compelled me to sit down and sob a long time after supper. I feel better now. Is my life burning itself away by ambition? When I last saw Laurie, I did not know that these years so full of busy gladness would hold for me the bitterness of a lost love. I did not know that so soon I should have reached almost middle life with nothing accomplished. I feel better now. I can hold my head and go on in my little sphere. My courage is renewed. I’ll do some good yet. See him? Of course I must. I wish he could come out to see me out here, but the cooking would embarrass Effie. It is improbable, though, that I shall spend the night there. To-day has been a bad day. My temper has been at a low condition. The atmosphere has been in that indescribable state which affects children. Perhaps, from this cause, I gave way to my feelings after supper. It was another surprise to see Roy Hatchett last evening. He returned this morning. As we cannot take him before about the first of November, he may not come, for persuasion is being brought to bear to place him at the Agricultural School. It was a great pleasure to see Roy. Our visit home was a pleasant one. We attended service at the new church Sunday. Brother Weatherford preached. It was very gratifying to see how neat the building will be when completed. There were thirteen baptisms here last week. Miss Mollie B. and Mr. Will B. want me to attend their picnic next Saturday, out north-east of Athens. I do not know just how I shall manage it yet and see Laurie too. No Institute Saturday. The program was not published for some cause.
