Wednesday night saw The Big Splash Heat #3 of the 2nd round of heats at The Rosemount. Blackbirds were sensational. All movement. Rock riffery. Innovative guitarist, handsome bass man & a dangerous yet on point drummer. A focus on conveying more song melody was mentioned by a few judges. Amani Consort played an exceptional set. Their soul grooves were masterfully; led by Aysha. But what a band she has assembled. Great songs, deep grooves. If you want great songs & entertainment & a loving charismatic front woman, GO AND SEE AMANI CONSORT! Our Man In Berlin, currently receiving a bit of love from Triple J with their falsetto post rock songwriting really are presenting something fresh & their performance was perhaps only let down by the structure & consequent dynamic of their set list. . BUT... Ensemble Formidable, the electric double bass, legit swing jazz drummer, violin toting sassy & vocal strong frontwoman, trombone & sax delivery, independent electric-light lit-up squeezbox; all underpinned by some masterclass guitar chords were too strong, too entertaining, too much a force - they took out the night!
