Weekend Review: For the penultimate weekend review of the year I decided to review an album by a Nu Wave band from Burton-On-Trent called Max Raptor. Max Raptor Portraits 2011 Genre: Nu Wave Punk For the people who haven’t heard of Max Raptor (which to be honest will be most people because they’re almost completely unknown) they’re a band that has taken the sound of Nu Wave and fused it with Traditional Punk Rock to make a pretty good album. The first song, ‘The King Is Dead’ is very intense and extremely explosive. This modern sounding Punk Rock gimmick really works for Max Raptor. You can tell that they’re passionate about what they’re doing (which is the number one ingredient for any musician) through their execution, energy and lyrics of not just this song, but all eight of them. ‘The Great and the Good’ including lyrics like ‘conscious exists now even in the wicked’ and the song ‘Patron Saint’ including lyrics like ‘drop bombs and the case if you can, we’re led by sick public figures with their heads in the sand’ clearly bring to light Max Raptors personal views and agenda; some brilliantly clever and possibly controversial lyrics from some brilliant songs. On top of this you can tell what ‘Obey the Whips’ is based around before you even listen to it. The raw 70’s Punk vocals and phenomenal Nu Metal music style combine flawlessly yet again for this song and this song and the next one, ‘Carolina’. It takes about a minute get going but, it’s worth the wait because once this song picks up it simply steals the show with its extraordinary vocals and infectious chorus beat that will make you want to listen to this song over-and-over. Ive already touched on the lyrics of ‘Patron Saint (Of Nothing)’ but, there are more interesting lyrics in this song. Other lyrics include ‘The patron saint we heard nothing he said, Ive got my own two fingers and Im pretty much proud of it’ and ‘built from the neck up, who cares? Why am I so tired of this glory?’ But, lyrics aside no matter what your views you can’t help but admire the outstanding quality of this song and album. ‘Ghosts’ includes more great lyrics like ‘living out a cage, earning minimum wage, who the hell are you fooling? Lyrics like this give you an idea on the purpose and meaning of this song. This is musically brilliant (like every other song) but, it follows up two of the best songs on the album so it hides in the shadows a little compared to other songs. ‘The Alarm’ is the closing song on the album is definitely worth the wait to get to, a great way to close-off the album. This album is fantastic from start to finish and doesnt have any bad tracks on it. Every song is great but, it’s only problems are how short it is and the order of the tracks (’Ghosts’ should have been track five). Theyve released an album since this one called ‘Mother’s Ruin’ which definitely worth a look if you’re interested by this album, great album, great band.
