Weekly Article, “The Sheriff’s View” (#85) As I began this week’s newsletter I had to pause for a moment when I typed in the date reflecting the month of September is already here, finding it hard to believe fall is just a few weeks away. In addition to this season being my personal favorite, by prior statistics is also means that law enforcement agencies can maybe slow down and take a breath, with the warm weather soon to pass. Some of you are aware that your Sheriff enjoys writing crime novels but this go around I had the opportunity to participate with a history book titled, “Preserving the Past – Protecting the Future: A history of Missouri’s Sheriffs.” This is a book that explores the roots of the office of Sheriff in Missouri, and reflects history about each Missouri County Sheriff’s Department dating back to the mid-1800s. This project was initiated by the Missouri Sheriff’s Association, of which each Missouri Sheriff is an active member. The endeavor began about a year ago, and every one of the 114 Missouri Sheriffs, along with the City of St. Louis, were asked to submit a history segment about the evolution of their agency. I have to admit that I truly enjoyed compiling this information and writing the section about Pulaski County. Credit also goes to retired Sheriff J.B. King, who helped research the subject matter. Publication will begin in October and the Missouri Sheriff’s Association is currently taking orders for those who are interested in this collectable piece of Missouri History. “Preserving the Past – Protecting the Future: A History of Missouri’s Sheriffs,” is an 11” by 8.5” hardback coffee table book that is a mixture of photographs, past and present sheriffs and law enforcement history from each county. You may pre-order your copy by visiting; missourisheriffshistorybook, or contacting Jeanne Merritt at 573.529.6900 or jeanne@mosheriffs. The City of Dixon, the Dixon Police Department, the Dixon School System and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department are working in conjunction with each other to assist the initiative of Dixon High School students to begin a Law Enforcement Explorers program in their community. Last Thursday we had the first planning session at the Dixon High School, and I am proud to say the wheels are now in motion. One Dixon student is bravely leading the charge, with numerous students expressing interest in the program. The above initiative is being modeled after the national Explorers Program, which primarily targets high school students that have an interest in a law enforcement career. These Explorers will operate both independently and with the above law enforcement agencies, and will involve themselves in a variety of local and statewide activities that give an insight to the law enforcement profession. During the upcoming Dixon Cow Days (Sept.19 & 20), stop by the Sheriff’s Department booth and visit some of your new Explorers. The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department last week welcomed a new AmeriCorps Vista worker who will be assigned to this agency to help with anti-drug endeavors. We are fortunate to have this volunteer for nine months, who will assist with the enforcement, educational and community programs that this agency is involved with in the fight against drug addiction in this county. This concludes another week’s summary as your Pulaski County sheriff, and I hope to see you here again next week. As always, stay safe and do something positive for your community. Sheriff Ronald Long
