Weekly Message November 18-24, 2013 Dear Friends in Christ, Scripture: Luke 23;33-43 “There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.” Luke 23:38 Blessings and Challenges: We are at the end of our liturgical church year with Christ the King Sunday and this reading of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He is a new kind of leader. How else can we explain a ruler who willingly goes to his death on behalf of his people? We will hear: • “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” Luke 23:35 • The mocking words hung above his head: “This is the King of the Jews.” • The conversation with the criminals hanging next to him. • The promise to one criminal, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Sometimes being a ruler is acting in a new way despite the crowd’s call for more familiar behavior. Jesus models a different kind of leadership, proving a ruler is not about ordering people to follow commands or executing power. We follow and worship a servant-leader. Prayer: Dear Jesus Christ, lead our lives and rule over us. Amen. Opportunities: Friday and Saturday November 22-23 - PLEASE help us ring the bell for the Salvation Army at Wayne’s Food Plus in Luck. We need many ringers on Friday! Christ the King Sunday, November 24th: • Worship at First at 9:00 am with Holy Communion, the Sunday school kids singing and the blessing of the LWR quilts. • Worship at Laketown at 10:30 with Holy Communion and baptism of Briggs Erickson, Tuesday, November 26, Combined Parish Thanksgiving Worship: 7 pm at First Wednesday, November 27 Confirmation class at 4:15 at First In Christ’s Amazing Love, Pastor Elaine
