Weekly Message from CHS Principal Christopher Haeger This past Monday, the School Board held its monthly committee of the whole meeting at CHS. It is my pleasure to announce that CHS social studies teacher and coach Mr. Cohen received the Superintendent’s Compass Award. This award is given monthly to a District staff member based on his/her overall professionalism and commitment to the District. After chatting with several CHS staff members about which staff member we would like to see honored, I decided to nominate Mr. Cohen for the award. Congratulations Mr. Cohen! On behalf of the CHS staff, the District, and all our students, thanks for all you do. This past Monday’s Board meeting saw me make a proposal to the Board to increase our graduation requirements from our current 22.5 to 28. The proposal includes a phase-in process that would include all current ninth and tenth graders needing 26 credits to graduate. The 28 credit requirement would not take effect until the class of 2019 graduates (current eighth graders). Why did I propose this increase? There are many reasons, and here are some of the more important ones: 1.) Students now enroll in eight classes per semester versus six. 2.) We are moving forward with requiring three credits of science versus the two that has been required. 3.) Overall, we want to make sure we are maximizing the overall educational experience for all of our students. The Board will make a formal decision on this proposal at its October 27 meeting. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I want to thank those parents/guardians who make timely school arrival a top priority at home. I know it’s not easy to juggle the many demands of our busy lives, but showing your son/daughter that timeliness is a key life skill is very important. I am hoping that the messages I sent home regarding this issue instigate positive improvements for some of our students. For those of you that have done a great job with this, I thank you, and please continue to do so.
