Weekly update - March 9: Dave Priebe will share stories of his experiences in Vietnam as a member of the US armed forces and talk about some of the Buddhist influences that came home with him. March 16: to be determined, stay tuned. Other Events: Wed. March 5, 2014 - 7 P.M. AT SCF Library COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS sponsored by SCUUF MIND AND MINDFULNESS: Join us for two engaging TED talks on the theme of the mind and mindfulness. In the first talk, Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroscientist, describes the functions of her left and right brain halves as she observed the functioning of her brain while having a massive stroke. The insights gained shaped her views of the nature of consciousness. Andy Puddicombe speaks in the second talk: All it takes is 10 mindful minutes. The subject is mindfulness, and juggling is used to demonstrate the process of mindfulness and observing our thoughts. Sunday, March 23 at 10 a.m. - Annual Meeting. This is a notice that the Annual Meeting will be held at the TF Community Center onSunday, March 23 at 10 a.m. (this is a fourth Sunday). Topics will include approval of next years budget, election of Steering Committee members (see note below), consideration of a Right Relations Policy, report on the Fellowship Survey that was just completed, and other matters as raised by the Fellowship. ________________________ SAVE THE DATE ---- Sunday, March 30 SCUUF Field Trip to the Minnesota Institute of the Arts Spirituality, Lifelong Learning, Fellowship and Art Appreciation all in one event! We have arranged transportation for the whole group. Our plans include leaving for the MIA at 9:30. We are scheduled for a special guided tour at 11:15 of the wonderful MIA exhibit called “Sacred”- perfect for us UUs. (Please read the description below to inspire you!) Everyone is on his own for lunch (bring a bag lunch or take a walk to one of the many ethnic restaurants nearby) and then we are each free to see lots of other amazing art until we depart at 3:30. Back “home” around 5. Because our Lifelong Learning budget does not totally cover the cost of this outing, we will ask for a small donation to cover the cost of the really nice bus from Mary Anne’s Tours in Lindstrom (our best price) and a wonderful carefree outing in the cities with our SCUUF members and friends. Is this of interest to you? Reply to the Horwich email (jphorwich@gmail) and get on our list. So far we have 20 who wish to go. IF there is room we would welcome any non-SCUUF friends who would like to come along to fill up our bus Description of Sacred In this exhibition, simply titled “Sacred,” curators have assembled art from every corner of the world. Although these works span time, distance, and disparate cultures, they share an evolving sense of the sacred. Each of the ten galleries in the exhibition features an installation or “mini-show” designed around different themes or narratives inspired by the word “sacred.” Conventionally used to describe something or someone imbued with divinity, the word has evolved as societies have become more diverse and secular. What’s sacred today? The word hinges on the speaker: what is sacred is often very personal. Many of the objects in these galleries were never intended for display in a museum. Taken out of their usual contexts, they ask to be seen differently, posing provocative questions about what is sacred. How does their presence here change our perception of them? In these juxtapositions, you can explore historical and contemporary expressions of the divine, the spiritual, the essential, and the beloved while reflecting on the meaning of the word “sacred.” What does it mean to you? Announcements: Need for Social Justice Chair. Teresa Wolfe has resigned as chair of the Social Justice Committee, so we are in need of someone else to assume that responsibility. If anyone is interested in serving the balance of this year (to June 30) and hopefully into next year, please contact John Horwich. Steering Committee Positions. All of the positions on the Steering Committee are one year terms, so each annual meeting we elect a full slate of Steering Committee Members. We anticipate that 2 of the current Steering Committee members (John and Carol) will not seek another term. Any member interested in serving on the Steering Committee should speak with any current member to discuss their interest and understand the nature of the position. Child Dedication. Jim will do a child dedication ceremony on May 18. Any parents interested in participating should let John Horwich or Carol Widen know.
