Welcome to Case Of The Week (COTW), an exercise in clinical - TopicsExpress

Welcome to Case Of The Week (COTW), an exercise in clinical scenarios designed to test your critical reasoning, diagnostic abilities, and management considerations. The cases are real life entities drawn from many years of clinical experience. Each will try to emphasize at least one ‘clinical pearl’ that hopefully you may draw upon as you progress with clinical exposures. Unless otherwise stated, cases will change weekly. The program will run until early spring and will have 20-25 scenarios. Each case will have some form of a visual clue, often an x-ray or photograph. I will be leaving a monitor at the station and, when possible with x-rays, post a ‘normal’ example for your comparison. This is an ‘open book’ use any resources exercise, discussion with buddies is encouraged, as well as comments and suggestions for future cases are welcome Most of all, have a little fun, a change from the mountains of memorization that go along with being a medical student especially during those early years of training. Those with the correct answers will be recognized weekly. Participation in ten or more scenarios constitutes ‘completion’ of the basic course requirements, and will receive a commendation that may be included in your CV if you so desire. The first case is to introduce you to an unusual situation that occurred many years ago, give you an opportunity to examine an x-ray, learn about a clinical tool, and comment on possibilities for resolution. As you will see, there is a diagnosis but it is not a disease entity. Enjoy.
