Welcome to join! 41st International Colloquium Of the Slovenian Society of Aesthetics, this Thursday and Friday / 26th and 27th September / at Cultural Center of European Space Technologies (KSEVT): AESTHETICS AND SPACE The Concept Of 41st International Colloquium Of the Slovenian Society of Aesthetics The art of the early avant-gardes from the beginning of twentieth century, were marked by subversive spirit, overturning established canons while directing their attention toward topical scientific, technological, economic and political developments. Russian Constructivism was therefore decisively linked to simultaneous revolutions in politics, as well as in mathematics and physics. Discussions of the fourth dimension and of non-Euclidean geometry, along with related changes in the concepts of time and space defined by mathematical and physical sciences, had immense influence on Constructivism, as well as related previous or simultaneous avant-garde movements (such as Italian Futurism). Attention to a different reality, future, technological development, science and politics, opened up a broad spectrum of possibilities and created new iconography, imagination and convictions concerning the potentials of art. Peter Bürger, in his influential work Theory of the Avant-Garde (1974), interprets the early (or the “historical”) avant-gardes as a source of great aesthetic transformations and as a sincere and forceful attack on bourgeois art institution, while he does not assign much significance to the postwar revival of avant-garde tendencies among the neo- avant-gardes. The space flights in the sixties and the accelerated and the on-going space provide fresh enthusiasm about and interest in physical and consequently in philosophical and cultural issues. In our present these are regaining significance, especially when aiming to develop possibilities for inhabiting the extraterrestrial space. In 2012 Cultural Center of European Space Technologies (KSEVT) was established in Vitanje, Slovenia. KSEVT center, first of its kind, is oriented in particular toward humanistic research of problems concerning with the universe, as well as humanistic and aesthetic issues in the intersection with the natural-technical space sciences. Slovenian Society for Aesthetics is supportive of such aims, so we were glad to organize our traditional annual 41st International Colloquium in cooperation with KSEVT in Vitanje. The purpose of the colloquium is to discuss space- and aesthetic-related philosophical issues, which is why we titled it “Aesthetics and Space.” The structural changes in art at the end of modernism established a basis in 21st century for ambitious projects at the intersection of art and science. Although they were often inspired by the early (historical) avant-gardes, they are nonetheless in many ways specifically contemporary. At the colloquium we will discuss issues such as in which sense the universe was explored in the avant- gardes, and how such ideas are discussed in contemporary art. How the aesthetics of space, exploration of space, and knowledge about space infiltrate contemporary culture and how we, in reverse, culturalise space. What is the meaning of the changed conception of time and space today, what does it mean to be a cosmonaut, how was levitation perceived in the past, and how is perceived today? Scientific and technological developments raise many questions about the future of humanity, life, the world and the universe, which are of interest to art and popular culture. Science fiction models various scenarios of the future, confronting us with possible outcomes of current decisions. Space-technology has furthermore significant impact on contemporary design and imagery. The development of novel technologies and the related media has, next to the space- exploration, a decisive influence on cultural understanding of the world, and the universe. Communication with space is conducted through various media, especially photography. In what sense are forms of communication and forms of sensuality that we apply, producing the universe? The colloquium aims to address issues mentioned as well as those that are related to the "spaceability" of aesthetics.
