Welcoming message from Amalgamated Students Association of Zimbabwe (ASAZ) Congratulations!! - is what I should say to you after being admitted into Zimbabwe’s best university – Chinhoyi University of Technology. After this everything else is a challenge. I warmly welcome all new as well as returning students to our College. We sincerely hope and wish that your stay here will be rewarding in all aspects. We believe that we will develop meaningful and long-lasting relationships in all our inter-actions. I believe you are joining this college in 2014 with a personal dream of your own. Often, it’s not about becoming a new person, but it is about realising your potential and abilities that you already posses within you and yet failing to exhibit them. If the greatest tragedy in life is not death but a life without a purpose, then the greatest shame in life is not revealing your true potential! Many of you will be faced with challenges of all sorts – academic, identity crisis, relationships, financial, and the list goes on and on. But more importantly, you will be faced with the challenge of being the best that you can be. So whatever your field of endeavor, love what you do and do what you love because that is the surest way to success. Don’t let your focus be the grades or your average or what class you finish with. Its quiet unfortunate that you have joined this university when we are experiencing leadership crisis actually when we have got a leadership vacuum. As someone who has been aspiring to be a student leader,I strongly believe that, the primary role student leadership is to focus on the needs and the interests of students at all levels of the College. Your academic needs must be their number one priority. Other student activities must be their second prime priority, so as to contribute to both your academic and social development. This is the time when our university is facing big challenges, but it always have leadership with no answers. For over the past years with our experience here at CUT it showed that all the SRCs were out of ideas and out of steam. Our standards are flat-lining infact deteriorating, but noone among them had anything to help on real life issues affecting us, nothing to help on the acommodation and nothing on transport systems. It shows that no politician and no union can make a difference. As ASAZ our case is simple: that CUT can and must be better The vision is one of institional renewal, a university with drive, purpose and energy In each area of policy a new and distinctive approach has been mapped out, one that differs from the old left and the ZICOSU,ZINASU right. This is why ASAZ is new ASAZ is a union of ideas and ideals but not of outdated ideology. What counts is what works. The objectives are radical. The means will be modern I believe in CUT. It is a great university which must be more technological advanced. Chinhoyi students are a great people. But I believe CUT can and must be better: better labs with more functional machines, better library with relevant books, better beds in hostels, with a more functional internet system , which must offer qaulity and health food. I want a CUT that is one university, with shared values and purpose, where merit comes before privilege, run for the many not the few, strong and sure of itself at home and across the whole nation. It is our wish to renew our universitys faith in the ability of its SRC and representatives to deliver this new CUT. It is our aim to represent all students rather than push a political agenda, beacause we come from different parties, but we’re students first. And our obligations to you must compel all of us, ZANU PFs AND MDCs, to cooperate, and compromise, and act in the best interests of this university we love. And we want, above all, to see CUT being governed in a way that brings our university together, that unites our university in facing the tough and dangerous challenges of the new changing society in which we must live. I want a CUT which we all feel part of, in whose future we all have a stake. I believe the SRC must be committed and it must be their mandate to unify the students of this college in order to contribute to the advancement of student interests in the academic, social, cultural and sporting spheres. I also believe you have the potential – even an obligation— to develop. The world desperately needs you, with your specific gifts... Join ASAZ a team that priorities development and learning and stay the course.Stay blessed. ASAZ Secretary General Shingirai Mikhail Chabata.
