Well, As we left church today we learned that my grandmother, Nanny, Lyda Smith Davis had passed away. I was so blessed to be able to go to Ms last week to see her. She wasnt able to speak but she knew me and tried to smile and laugh at things I said. She was 91y/o last March. She has lived a good long life. Nanny was a huge blessing in my life. She has done so much for me and for the rest of the family. Nanny was a great cook and one of the ways that she showed her love was knowing each ones favorite dish. When she knew I was coming for a visit she would always ask me if I wanted her to have a pot of red beans or a pot of black-eyed peas ready when I arrived, because she knew those were two of my favorites. Mine never did taste just like hers. I wondered if it was the difference in the water over there or what. She loved to feed everybody. She was well known for her biscuits, her coconut cake, her lemon jello cake, & tea cakes. I dont think anyone ever left her house hungry! Nanny never had a lot materially speaking but she was the most content person I ever knew. It just didnt take a whole lot to make her happy. If anyone ever gave her anything that was able to be shared, she would share it with various friends & family members. She had a generous & loving spirit. Nanny had the ability to take things in stride. She faced many problems & disappointments in her life but I never saw her act out or get her feathers ruffled. When I would call Nanny, she was always telling me about what they were getting out of the garden & if there had been a family gathering she would tell me , in detail what all they had for the meal. The most important thing she did for her family is that she provided us an example of Jesus. Ive heard the saying You may be the only Jesus some people ever see. Not that Nanny was perfect, but she really was a good example of a godly woman. If Ive ever known a true Proverbs 31 woman, it was Nanny. Nanny was blessed to be happily married to my papa, W.B. Smith for over 50 years. They had two daughters, 6 grandchildren, & 10 great grands. After his passing in 1995, she was alone much of the time until she remarried at the age of 82!! For the last 9 years she has been married to Dave Davis, better known as Poppa Junior. He has been a huge blessing to my Nanny & our family. He has been a loving companion with whom she has shared many enjoyable days. She served her husband, her elderly mother and father, and her family & friends for many years. Then God sent her a servant, Mr. Junior, who liked nothing better than to be with her & make her life easier. We cant thank him enough for being there for her when we couldnt. Our lives will never be the same without her. I dont know what we will do without her prayers. We always knew for sure that Nanny had a prayer covering over us. We are sad for us but so happy for her. She has no more back pain, no worries, & no struggles. She has fought a good fight, she has run a good race, & she has finished well. Now I challenge all those that she loved to take hold of the baton, run your race, & put forth your greatest effort to run & finish your race at least as well as Nanny did & do better if you can. Nothing would please & honor Nanny any more than that.
