Well, I guess that today Ive got some recommendations to make. Yeah, I know that probably puts me solidly in the busybody camp. First of all I think that its a good idea to vote. I filled out my ballot and mailed it off today. Ive got to say that in many respects I miss going to a polling place and voting. Today we are insulated from one another in so many ways. I miss getting off work, going to my local polling place smiling at the people volunteering and walking out with an I voted sticker displayed on my Carhartt jacket. There was a sense of community inherent in that experience. Today I also sat in my big chair paying bills and and resubscribing to a couple of publications. One was The Grapevine, the other The Seattle Times. Now mind you I dont consider The Seattle Times a great newspaper. But there is some journalistic integrity and a little investigative reporting involved. Every now and then I think about subscribing to The New York Times. However I would feel remiss if I didnt read every issue nearly cover to cover. My point to is this. If youre at all interested in the world around you, dont just depend upon the completely unverifiable information being disseminated by various cranks on the internet or on Facebook. Well go ahead if you want to appear ignorant. Because if you repost nonsense people who have bothered to stay informed will consider you a gullible fool. If you cannot afford subscriptions and have the time get a library card. Many publications are available at your public library. Or go online to find credible news sources. Another recommendation, if you are a reader try patronizing independent book stores. Their employees are frequently knowledgeable and reasonably well read. Once again get a library card! Listen to music! Listen to music that you like and listen to music that you are unfamiliar with. Give it a chance. Popularity frequently doesnt equate with quality. Whenever you have a chance go listen and see live music. This is another thing that isnt necessarily expensive. Your brain will thank you and and your soul will thank you too! If you have children expose them to as much art as you possibly can. Someday they will be grateful. One of my fondest memories of my mother is of her taking me to see Louis Armstrong when I was in grade school. Although I have a great number of opinions regarding how the rest of you should conduct yourselves, at the present time I only have one more recommendation. Floss your teeth.
