Well, I may have dodged a bullet with the 318ti. Ethan said it - TopicsExpress

Well, I may have dodged a bullet with the 318ti. Ethan said it swung into the red and then started smoking (which I took to mean smoke came out the exhaust) at which point he parked it and had it towed home. What I found is a car that was low about 1/2 gallon on antifreeze, has a puddle of antifreeze in the little valley around the hood latch, starts right up, doesnt clatter, and has no smell of antifreeze in the exhaust. The started smoking may well have been a pressure release of antifreeze through the cap. So, yes, the kid listened to his father (DONT DRIVE IT IN THE RED) and probably saved the car. Despite having replaced the electric fan and temperature sensor when I did the full-on prophylactic cooling system replacement last year, I have had intermittent problems with the fan not turning on. I think its time to, at least for the summer, bypass the smarts and wire the damned thing directly to the battery (with in-line fuse, of course). Did I mention that I hate electric-only cooling fans? (only in a chapter-long rant in my book...)
